March for Free Speech and Justice for Victims of Police Killings

The Uhuru Movement
led a march and rally to speak out against St. Petersburg's attempt to
sterilize the city by using heavy-handed laws and actions.
Three issues were highlighted:
(1) An "emergency" ordinance prohibiting free speech activities
throughout a "clean zone" surrounding Tropicana Field
went into effect for the duration of the 2008 World Series in St.
Petersburg. (2) Another anti-free speech ordinance went
into effect this month prohibiting anyone from holding a placard
or passing out flyers in the median. (3) To call for justice and
reparations for the families of unarmed African teenagers killed by law
enforcement in St. Petersburg - most recently, Javon Dawson, and 12
years ago this week, TyRon Lewis. Two others recently killed were Marquell McCullough and Jarrell Walker. The march was supported by the African People's Solidarity Committee, St. Pete for Peace, Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (Tampa Bay), The Refuge, Rise Up Tampa Bay, and others. |
