In response to the Gulf oil spill, and as part of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition's "Seize BP" campaign, about 40 people protested in front of a BP gas station in St. Petersburg on May 12, 2010. Response from the rush hour traffic was exceedingly positive. Demonstrators told BP, who made $6.5 billion in profit the first three months of 2010, that BP, not taxpayers must pay for this disaster. Protesters also called out President Obama and other politicians who accept campaign contributions from the oil industry in exchange for watered-down laws and regulations.
