Economy: Tunisia has a diverse economy, with important agricultural, mining, tourism, and manufacturing sectors. Unemployment 9.4% (2009).
Government: The Tunisian Republic gained independence from France in 1956. Ousted President Zine el Abidine BEN ALI, an ally of the U.S. was ousted Jan. 2011. Prime Minister Mohamed GHANNOUCHI now in power. Secular country but human rights groups say the authorities tolerate no dissent, harassing government critics and rights activists.
